Butter

There are currently two butter choices on the form. Both are grassfed and organic. Which one you get will depend not only on which you prefer but how willing you are to carve up a huge block and find someone to split a LOT of it with you vs just taking conveniently prewrapped packages.

Natural by Nature salted, grassfed, kosher butter in a 55 lb block. Hmm. Their web site says it's low-temp pasteurized, too. If you want any of that, you don't have much hope getting it putting down that you want 2 or 3 pounds. With 55 pounds to share, you'll have to find someone to split it with and plan to put a lot in your freezer. It's not that difficult to portion out, really. It's a 12 inch cube that's you can carve with a hot knife and some effort. It's the cheapest option, of course, it just takes some cooperation and carving and wrapping and weighing (all of which can be done here at my kitchen table, just not by me).

The second option is Organic Valley's cultured pasture butter. They only make it from May through September when the grass is lush and at its nutritional peak. The price listed on the form is for an 8 oz package. (Mother Earth and Ward's have it, it's in a shiny green foil wrap. 4.15 at Ward's, 4.45 at ME.) More expensive per pound than the Natural by Nature, but you only have to order 6 pounds at a time, and it's already portioned and wrapped (and about $1 cheaper per package through the co-op than at local stores).

You'll have to look at the order form for the current prices, as prices change week to week.

I've taste-tested the two, and they're both dang good. The NbN is a little softer at the same temperature and although it's salted it tasted much less salty than OV. Edit: I think Safa may be right thinking it's not salted. Even though it's listed as "salted", it doesn't taste like it is.
